I did some museum skills workshops with children at Chewton Primary School. Grade 5-6 catalogued and re-housed some items from the school archive – some wonderful 1920s crepe paper costumes, worn by former students at the school.
The children seemed to enjoy learning about museum practices as much as doing art activities.
The costume is now catalogued and stored in an archival textiles box, along with an original photo of girls from Chewton Primary School dressed for Miss Seddon’s c.1928 concert.
The younger grades also learnt some museum skills, doing some experiments on paper to see how different conditions damaged the paper, and packing some small items.
